MANGA

Since Shoujo Kakumei Utena was first created as a manga series, the first version of Utena was in manga form. Originally, Utena appeared as a strawberry blond, but Chiho Saito decided to change her hair colour to pink after the first two manga volumes of Shoujo Kakumei Utena were published. Utena's personality is the similar to that of the anime, and her clothes are like those from the anime.

ANIME

The anime version of Utena shows her as the loyal, justice-seeking, innocent girl who wants to be a prince. She gets along well with most of her classmates and is well respected by them, and her open personality makes her very popular. She is outgoing and friendly and is usually very sure of herself. Notably, her uniform consists of a boy's black jacket, and red biker shorts. Her straight hair is pink, slightly layered, and falls just past her shoulders.

MOVIE

Utena's personality is reversed: reserved, quieter, and a general introvert as opposed to the anime. A difference is that Touga used to be her boyfriend. In the anime version of Shoujo Kakumei Utena, she never really cared about Touga nor was she interested in him romantically, but she seems as though she was in love with Touga during their time together. Looks-wise, she still retains the fabulous pink mane, but now she's got fuller bangs, and her hair tumbles in loose curls all the way down to her waist. Her eyes are drawn much larger and rounder, giving her a more innocent look. During school hours, Utena usually wears the boy's jacket (now altered so it is black and white), with matching pants. Her hair is pulled back and tied up so that it gives her a more boy-ish appeal, and she tops it off with a black hat (ooh la la, quel style!). During duels though, Utena ditches the hats, lets her hair down, and trades the pants in favour of black and white biker shorts.
