+++ LOVE +++

Ah...l'amour. Throughout the series, as people usually do, they feel an attraction towards others. And in Shoujo Kakumei Utena, Utena soon develops somewhat interesting and tangled romantic relationships with others. Here are her love interests:

Kiryuu Touga
The popular, self-proclaimed "ladies' man," Touga happens to be the president of the Student Council. In the beginning, Utena is not the least bit interested in Touga. In fact, she is the first girl at Ohtori Academy who has resisted his charms and reject him, but Touga's persistent nature welcomes his rejection as an even greater challenge to win Utena over, and he even sends her a dress to wear to the school ball. The attention he pays to Utena does not impress her, and she just lives out her life without caring about Touga.

Touga, being a manipulative character, has ulterior motives: it appears to be that he has been observing Utena from afar to learn her weakness, so that way he may challenge her and win the power to revolutionize the world. He tricks her into thinking that he is the prince Utena has been searching for, and unable to fight her prince, Utena loses her the duel and herself. Utena comes to terms with herself though, and challenges Touga to a re-match, but this time fighting for herself, for her own sake. Utena defeats him once again to reclaim her position as Victor.

Later on during the series, you realize Touga does have a heart and has truly fallen for Utena. Touga requests Utena's company at the dueling arena one night where he confesses that he really does care for Utena, and the two share a kiss that night. However, Touga realizes that Utena will make it to the final duel known as "Revolution." Knowing the consequences of the last duel, Touga desperately attempts to save Utena from reaching the awful fate of the final duel by challenging her one last time. If he can win, he will take her place of Victor and prevent Utean from fighting against Akio. In the end, Touga could not win the duel, nor could he save Utena.

Ohtori Akio
Akio is the brother of Anthy, and chairman of Ohtori Academy. Utena meets him shortly after discovering Anthy has a brother, and instantly falls for the dark and mysterious Akio. Akio is handsome, intelligent, smooth, charming, and acts with great kindness towards Utena, which wins her respect and heart, however, this seemingly pure appearance hides an ugly truth. Unfortunately for Utena, her feelings are not exactly reciprocated. Akio does take a certain interest in Utena, but not in the way she would like.

Akio is actually an incarnation of Dios, or better known as the corrupted Ends of the World. By winning Utena's love, Akio is able to use her love for him as a tool, a tool with which he could easily manipulate Utena. He continually deceives Utena, but Utena being the girl who's own innocence blinds her naturally, amplified by her love for Akio, is never able to detect the darker side to Akio. Akio is always aware of Utena's crush on him, and even takes her out on a date, all in an attempt to make her into a princess because if she became his princess, he would never have to worry about her revolutionizing the world.

When Utena must battle Akio in the final duel, "Revolution," it is the ultimate trial for her, because she has to choose whether she will become the prince she always dreamed of becoming, or whether she should become a princess. In the end, Utena rejects Akio and chooses to become the prince that saves the princess instead of becoming Akio's princess.

Dios
Dios is the actual prince that Anthy once loved, and he was the prince who saved all the little girls. Every girl that Dios saved would become his princess, but Anthy was jealous because she could never become one of Dios' princesses since she was his sister. Then he fell ill and was consequently sealed away by Anthy in her effort to protect him. Because Anthy sealed Dios away, the girls were no longer being saved anymore because there was no prince. The townspeople cried that she must release him, but Anthy refused because she knew that if he went out to try and rescue the girls, he would die. For this, the townspeople condemned Anthy as a witch and she was punished. She was crucified, but she possessed eternal life so that she would suffer in her pain forever.

Meanwhile, Dios had become corrupted and turned into Akio.

Then, one day, he came across a little girl who had lost her parents. He showed her Anthy's body, and this greatly affected the little girl. She pressed him to save her, but he claimed that he could not do so because he was no longer the prince the girl once loved. He had become too corrupt, he could no longer be a prince. The little girl couldn't stand watching Anthy suffer in her pain, so she decided to become a prince herself. The girl was Utena.
