+++ FRIENDSHIP +++

Being the popular girl that she is, Utena obviously has friends, as well as some enemies. Here are the more important people who play a meaningful role in her life:

Shinohara Wakaba
Utena's best friend since she transferred to Ohtori Academy. Wakaba is eternally cheerful, happy, silly and bubbly. She calls Utena her "boyfriend" and jumps on her back, making her carry her around piggy back style. This might make their relationship appear to be just a little bit more than just friends, but Wakaba only means it as a joke, and it shows the two share a deep, special bond. Wakaba is actually quite in love with Kyouichi Saionji, and writes him a love letter. Saionji posted the letter on a bulletin board where it attracts much attention. Wakaba is humiliated and Utena, out of her anger for her friend's broken heart and humiliation, challenges Saionji. Because of her loyalty to her best friend, Utena unknowingly becomes entangled with the Rose Bride and the Duelist's Code.

Chu Chu
Utena actually denies not losing on purpose for Anthy, but rather, says she did it for Chu Chu's sake. Yes, that bizarredly cute monkey/mouse thing with a tie. Under Saionji, Chu Chu was also being abused (and squished under his shoe!), but he grows to like the kind and gentle Utena very fast. Utena enjoys teasing Chu Chu and not letting him eat her cake.

Kaoru Miki
The genius seventh grader and Student Council member, Kaoru Miki, is a friend of Utena. Though they aren't particularly close, he is often seen talking and hanging out with Utena and Anthy (whom he loves). Miki is a very sweet and gentle boy, and is quite talented at playing the piano. He offers to tutor Anthy and Utena in math, since they weren't doing so hot in the subject. During the Ohtori Akio saga of the storyline, Utena accepts her third challenge from Saionji because he brusquely slaps Miki in front of her. Aw, the poor boy. ^^;; In the manga version, Miki has a crush on Utena, and even manages to steal a kiss from her during her sleep.

Arisugawa Juri
Utena has a deep respect for the captain of the fencing team, Arisugawa Juri, and often calls her Juri-sempai out of this respect. When Utena talks to Juri at night and sees her more feminine side, Utena is caught in surprise by being able to see Juri in such a different light, and there is an implied feeling of attraction on behalf of Juri towards Utena, however, Juri is quickly angered by Utena's blind faith in miracles, and tries to take her rose emblem ring away from her. Juri's cold nature does not waver in Utena's presence, however, Juri seems to reciprocate this respect back towards Utena after her defeat during their duel.

Saionji Kyouichi
Her first duel was against the Victor at the time, and captain of the kendo club, Kyouichi Saionji. Saionji seems to resent Utena because he lost Anthy to her, and this blow to his ego is worsened after their rematch and his second loss. Unable to recover from his losses, he suffers, and his damaged ego causes him to skip the Student Council meetings, which ultimately expels him from the school.

Kiryuu Nanami
Although Nanami focuses much of her attention on destroying Anthy, her jealous streak flares up quite noticeably when she sees that Touga is paying attention to Utena. Fiercely devoted to Touga, Nanami tries to keep all people away from her Touga, including Utena. Since Utena lives with and protects Anthy, Nanami does not always get along with Utena because of her hatred for Anthy.
